Surya; authentic Indian street food in the heart of Barcelona

When it comes to Indian food we’re a divided nation in the L+P household, Liam’s always loved a good curry and grew up taking plenty of trips to Indian restaurants and family takeaways on Friday nights but Danielle only had her first Indian meal at the age of 22. However there’s a nice little spot that meets in the middle on which we can both say we love... and that’s Indian Street Food! We’re pretty lucky to have one of the UK’s top 10 Indian restaurants (according to Tripadvisor a couple of years ago - we can’t find the most up to date one, our baddd) in our tiny little village of Cheadle and it’s pretty damn amazing and we’ve never found anywhere else that can rival it, at least in Manchester anyway.

On our recent trip to Barcelona we stumbled across Surya, offering up authentic Indian street food a few blocks away from our cute little hotel. Looking pretty grand with its decor and taking up a corner spot it’s hard to miss this place, and with one read of the menu that was displayed outside we were hooked. The whole feel for this place is a super colourful 21st century India fused with a few futuristic spacey shots for a real edgy vibe.

To get a real taste of what these guys can do we'd recommend ordering the Chat Mix Platter, a generous combination of pani puri (complete with their own fancy syringe for a bit of theatre!), papdi chat and aloo tikki. You'll struggle choosing your favourite thing because everything packs its own flavour punch. Follow that up with one of their customisable rolls for the ultimate get-your-hands-stuck-in feast. Whether your down for the veggie option or something meaty it's all cooked in their tandoor oven guaranteeing that it's going to be pushing some serious flavour. Choose a naan or chapati, whether you want it flavouring with cheese, garlic, butter or just straight up and then choose what you want it stuffing with from their nine delicious fillings.

Their cocktails are pretty special too, being served in the fanciest glassware (it really makes the difference guys!) and carrying twists on your favourite tipples. We opted for the ginger Moscow mule complete with egg white, rosemary, honey & lime and a red pepper Bloody Mary flavoured with toasted cumin, tobasco and worcester sauce, both insanely sippable and would definitely have us coming back for more time and time again!
