Gin carafes & deli boards at Didsbury’s Botanist
Although there’s a few Botanist sites knocking around now, there’s something about this place that makes it feel like a one off. It’s just got that certain charm that makes it feel really small, intimate and like they’re doing something different. That said, the Didsbury branch is pretty huge occupying two floors of a corner building that once belonged to a Wetherspoons. After the extensive makeover (or makeunder with all those shabby details) you’d never know that the place was once known for having cheap pints and sticky carpets.
Botanist is known for beautifully crafted botanical cocktails and sharing cocktails served straight from watering cans (often slightly leaky but just adding to the rustic charm). If you’re into whiskey we’d recommend trying the blackberry & mint julep for a tart take on the original, or if you fancy something sweet try the raspberry disaranno sour which is topped up with pomegranate juice. But for us, the gin & tonic carafes can't be beaten, choose from Tanqueray, Hendrick’s or Brockmans all complete with garnishing for £18.95 - they say it yields 4 glasses on the menu but we always manage to get 6 which isn’t something to grumble about!
They’re also pretty well known for their hanging kebabs much like everyone’s favourite Spinningfields haunt, Oast House, but personally we’re all about their deli boards which you create yourself from a big selection of tasty treats. The homemade scotch egg with piccalilli always hits the right spot and you can’t beat the warm mini chorizo sausages either but there’s literally an endless selection of dishes that you can add to your board.
Bonus tip: watch out for their calendar of events as their musical bingo is a must attend! If you’re quick with a bingo dabber, happy to sing along at the top of your voice and know your stuff when it comes to music you could see yourself and your friends winning shots, cocktails and wine!
