Ink, the start of our Amsterdam story

Last week we took a mini break to Amsterdam to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and there's not many places better to celebrate your paper anniversary than an old newspaper printers turned luxury boutique hotel is there? With us both being graphic designers the quirky design elements of Ink Hotel shone out above the rest, especially with it being so centrally located too, just a few steps out of the door and you're in Dam Square, visiting the Anne Frank house, exploring the wonders of the red light district or catching a train from central station.

From the outside Ink is completely unsuspecting, yes it has curb appeal but you could easily walk straight past this pretty small sleek building without spotting it but once you head through the doors the place is huge with a giant letterpress display greeting you as you head down the sloping floor to reception and the restaurant. Everywhere you look is full of character and nods to the buildings rich heritage of the former HQ of De Tijd newspaper from pots of blue Pantone ink and cute little handwritten signs everywhere. The Pressroom bar & restaurant are steeped in luxury with deep blue and brass as far as the eye can see and type writers, paper rolls and books filling up every shelf.

The rooms are decorated in a similar fashion giving them a real modern twist of a 20s feel from brass, marble and black combination. The intricate custom-made hand-drawn map wallpaper by artist Jan Rothuizen really steals the show and has you inspecting every element for witty insights such as "don't trust this mans, he wants something from you", "my ex-girlfriend lives here" and "prostitutes" next to a bunch of stickmen drawings. Each room has its own little Nespresso machine which is perfect for a late afternoon pick me up after a full morning of exploring the city. The open plan bathroom is finished with a large double sided circle mirror which is perfect when you both want to get ready at the same time. Despite being so centrally located you can guarantee that you'll sleep like a baby in the giant plush king size beds without hearing a peep from the outside world, the rooms are genuinely so quiet. Our room was located right outside the elevator and we were never disturbed by any of the other guests.

Now we love a hotel breakfast as much as the next couple and they're really not too difficult to beat but Ink certainly knows how to do just that. We had a continental breakfast included as part of our stay but expected nothing more than a good cup of coffee, some juice and a croissant, but when we arrived for the "breakfast buffet" on our first morning we were pleasantly surprised by the wonders we found. From bacon, scrambled eggs, tomatoes and sausages to Dutch cheeses, smoked salmon and hams, to yoghurts, a granola bar and freshly baked croissants, cream and brownies there's guaranteed to be something that tickles your fancy!

If you're looking for some luxury in the city this is definitely the place for you. We'll certainly be back one day for a brand new chapter..
