Lunch at Ham & Friends in Leeds
Once in a while you come across the kind of place that stops you in your tracks and truly bowls you over, Ham & Friends is just that kind of place. Sat right at the top of Leeds city centre you'll find H&F in all its glory, nestled within the Grand Arcade. I (Danielle) was lucky enough to enjoy a tasting menu here after taking part in a food styling and photography course run by Victoria Harley and Food&_ as part of Leeds Indie Food festival hosted in H&F whilst Liam stayed at home playing with his coffee kit. Not only that, but we were the first group ever to try out the food as they'd only just opened their doors for business.
Ham & Friends isn't an amazing restaurant... it's an amazing restaurant, cheese shop, wine shop, bar and food hall all rolled into one. Not only that but the scandi vibes are off the hook and you'll instantly want to hit them up for their interior decorator contacts.
The food on the day took the shape of a tasting menu with the most perfectly matched wines but you can also order a more informal charcuterie board too, either way all the ingredients are carefully selected from their trusted suppliers. As quality and provenance is key to Ham & Friends the menu changes regularly depending on what's going to be the best for that season. The stand out dish had to be the lamb belly, celeriac, wild garlic pesto, capers and goats cheese - I'm not usually a fan of lamb but this one had a fine crispy layer on the top with lean succulent lamb underneath and not an ounce of stringy fat, the whole dish just worked together perfectly in every way. All dishes were presented beautifully and matched some of the best fine dining restaurants that we've eaten in at triple the price. For reference, their sample menu online is priced between £4 and £10 a dish which you really can't grumble at!
Next time we're in Leeds we'll definitely be giving this place another visit and we seriously recommend you do too!
Ps. If you're interested in the food photography course they're hosting another on the 4th of November covering colour selection, lighting, composition and prop sourcing and tickets are available now.
