Espresso and Tonic at Toma Café

I'd like to say that we stumbled across Toma whilst we were wandering the backstreets on Madrid, but in fact we googled it and hunted it down (read:followed the google map) in desperate need of a good cup of coffee.

It sits on a bit of a backstreet in the trendy Madrid district of Malasana. Inside a very unassuming exterior you're greeted with chairs and benches of varying heights, all occupying locals, tourists and students huddled around laptops making use of the free wifi. The decor is exactly what we like too, kind of a modern mid-century feel with nice plants and quirky objects adorning the walls and shelves.

The menu at Toma is pretty varied, extending much further than your usual cappuccino or latte, with options ranging from pour over coffee to the weird and wonderful sounding Orange Cappuccino. We opted for an iced latte and a venture into the unknown with an espresso tonic. It was a 30+ degree day so we needed cooling down.

We perched ourselves at a tiny table in the corner whilst the expert baristas prepared our drinks. We were both more than pleased with what we were served. The iced latte looking more like a Saturday night cocktail than a Monday morning coffee hit the spot, the perfect balance of sweet and bitter with the espresso tonic really living up to expectations. Since trying that first one it's become a firm favourite!

It would be easy to dismiss this place if you were to be walking past it, but if you like a good brew then you'd be gutted if you did.
